Want to make some extra money, but don’t want to commute? Working from home is a great option, and the career choices are multiplying as technology advances and the economy changes. Here are three careers you can have as a telecommuter.

Customer service: Working from home is extremely popular with customer service positions that used to be held in call centers. Employers are discovering that employees work better and are happier when working at home, not to mention that the company no longer has to pay for office space. These jobs cover anything from taking orders for flower deliveries to talking to airline customers about lost luggage.

Project-based work: Whether you are a graphic designer, editor, writer, or other artisan, you can build a client base for project-specific work. The key to this, of course, is finding and sustaining a steady flow of projects. When you start, network with all the connections that you have and look up other companies in your area with Canada 411 so that you can meet with them and form a relationship.

Professional career: You can also work from home with a typical office career. In these jobs, you still contact your fellow office workers and supervisor, as well as your customers, but you are working from your own home. You can even attend conference meetings while at home with such technology as Skype and Vyew.

If you need some extra income while staying at home, these are great telecommuting options. With no commute and lower overhead, you will make more out of your day and have more time and interaction with your family.

All or nothing? How about something in between? When it comes to working in the medical industry, you may not realize that there are options that allow you to have greater control over your career, your time, and your future. Which option is right for you? It all comes down to what you want most.

Permanent Medical Work

A steady career in the medical field is a hugely rewarding and highly regarded path. Doctors, therapists, orthodontists: these are all positions

Image via Wikipedia

that require an extensive investment in schooling and time but have big payoffs. Nurses and physician assistants, however, require less schooling and fewer years to reach lofty heights, but can still earn well.

The Pros: A steady paycheck that may increase with experience. Opportunities for advancement will be available to you. Benefits such as insurance are offered, and perks may be plentiful.

The Cons: Holidays, breaks, and personal time are more limited with a permanent, full time career. Job security isn’t a given anymore.

Part Time Medical Work

Part time, temporary, and contract work allows individuals with a passion for the medical field to have a rewarding job while still having a potentially generous portion of freedom. Travel nursing careers are the perfect example of this. As medical professionals, travel nurses attend patients where the need is greatest on a contract basis; it satisfies pay requirements (and often includes handsome benefits) and wanderlust.

The Pros: Part time, temporary, or contract work affords greater control over time.

The Cons: Advancement will be limited to non-existent with part time work. If you do temporary or contract work, there may be long periods of time without assignments; job hunting or networking to find more temp work will be frequent. Insurance and benefits may not be available.

Financial Advising

The financial world is a busy and fast-paced environment. Those who are interested in a career in this market enjoy many benefits, but some personality types are not as suited for these jobs. Those who often become stressed at work might not enjoy the responsibilities, but others may find that the fast-moving environment is thrilling and exciting.

Job Description

A financial advisor’s main job duty is managing the money of clients who have extra income that they are interested in investing. This requires a great deal of trust, so the advisor must help the customers feel at ease and comfortable. Offering a person free reign to funds can be difficult, so being fully qualified and helping clients understand the process of investment will be helpful. Financial advisors often train under brokers and other professionals to understand every step of investing before beginning to work on their own. After this, many financial advisors choose to become self-employed, which results in setting hours, flexibility to work from a location other than the office, and other benefits.

Investment Opportunities

Some will advise clients to invest in stocks, bonds, and other lower risk options. However, for those who enjoy a higher risk with potential to earn more money, UFX Markets Trading is a great option and involves buying and trading foreign currencies.

Next Step

Once a person has become a financial advisor, obtaining clients is not always easy. Becoming established may take time, or simply getting the right customer’s money to begin investing. Word of mouth advertising can go a long way in this business, so helping keep clients happy is crucial. Being a trusted and helpful financial advisor can lead to high income and great payoffs.

Marketing a business is all about getting fresh looks from potential customers and turning those views into sales. And it’s a proven fact that a clever and well-designed marketing campaign draws interest from all walks of life. The goal is to catch the attention of someone who never knew you existed or that your business has something of value for them.

The first rule about marketing is understanding the psychology of the customer. To begin with, you have a product to sell, and you need a person to buy it. So how do you get the attention of that potential buyer?

As already mentioned, clever marketing copy draws in attention. The next step is to hook that customer into visiting your physical or virtual location. It is finding an effective hook that is the difficult part.

An ever-popular hook is the “getting something for nothing” adage. Providing a value-added incentive to your marketing campaign is the simplest and effective hook you can use. As an example, offer a casino bonus code for visiting. Many people like to gamble and getting a code for extra plays or free chips is a sure bet to get attention.

Think outside of the box when it comes to creating a financial incentive. Contact a popular business in the area and ask if they would like to cross-campaign discounts with you. A reciprocal agreement between two businesses creates a “cross-fertilization” of customers which benefits everyone involved, even the customers.

A creative marketing campaign wins out over an average and dull one every day. Don’t be afraid to “go there” when building a client base.

It’s lonely at the top, the hard work and late nights that make for good business often wreak havoc on relationships but is it possible to have it all? A thriving business and fulfilling relationships? people do it all the time and the biggest key to it all is balance. Hard workers often see relationship building as a waste of time and therefore refuse to put in the effort to make relationships successful. Happy entrepreneurs are those who realize not only is relationship building healthy but it is also important to the success of any business.

Schedule time for recreation that has nothing to do with work: It should be a no-brainer right? the idea that time off means time to have fun and unwind? Goal oriented people some times forget this simple idea. If this is you, consider scheduling in play time. Once a month ink in something you love to do and be sure to include your favorite people as well. This will give needed rest, recuperation and foster emotional connections that contrary to popular belief, all human beings need.

Take advantage of flexible schedules to be there for the family:Those who work at home most times have the unique opportunity of creating their own schedules. Wise workers will take advantage of this and use the extra time and availability to spend with family. That is usually the reason to work at home but building a business takes time and family relationships can get put on the sidelines. Make family a priority as well by giving them a regular place on your calendar.

There comes a time in our lives when we need to make decisions, a time when we realize that the path we are on is about to change. At times we can do something about the change, but at other times it’s thrust upon us with little chance to react.

A crossroads in our lives, created by either a desire to do something different or redundancy or some other circumstance. A chance to take stock and look around.

The openings

whatever stage we are in with our careers, be it as an employee forced to re-evaluate our position, or one finally ready to take the risk of going freelance the key is going to be the right preparation for the role. Preparation that involves working through interview questions (even freelances still have to interview to win some contracts) marketing strategies and building relationships.

Self employment can take you on an interesting journey, from the safety of the office or factory to the excitement of traveling to meet clients as you build your business. The thrill of learning how to market your skills, not too dissimilar to the way they were marketed to gain that job you had, but with one big difference, this time all the gains will be yours and you family’s to enjoy.

The results

Job searching is not a role for the faint of heart. It is hard work. The best way to get through is to prepare well for the chase of finding the job and be prepared to think differently, maybe go self employed for a while and see where it takes you.

Persons in a difficult job search, when few positions are available, may benefit by taking temporary work. You may have skills that are sought after by businesses that are not ready to hire permanent employees. Some businesses have seasonal needs, or periodic changes in the amount of work they do. If you are able to help them as an independent contractor, you can be earning while searching for a long-term position. If you would rather be your own boss, consider self-employment, working for a number of different client businesses.

A career as a freelance professional requires considerable self-control and motivation. The freedom such a profession offers may be all the motivation you need to make the required sacrifices to be successful. You will have to manage finances so that you can meet expenses while income varies from month to month. Taxes and insurance will be your responsibility, not that of a human resource department. Before committing to pursuing an independent contractor career, carefully evaluate whether you have the necessary qualities to make it work.

Finding customers who will contract for your services, and building relationships with enough clients to provide an adequate income may be difficult, but when you succeed, it will bring great satisfaction. One way to keep your head above water, while either looking for a permanent position, or building your own clientele, is to work through a temporary agency. You can get acquainted with a variety of workplaces, and meet a lot of people, without cluttering your resume with a job history that would make potential employers wary of hiring you.
